What is Japan's Consumption Tax?

Japan's consumption tax (消費税 / Shōhizei) is a value-added tax applied to most goods and services. The current standard rate is 10%, introduced in October 2019.

A reduced rate of 8% applies to certain essential items: food and beverages (excluding alcohol and dining out) and newspapers sold under subscription contracts.

Under Japan's Qualified Invoice System (インボイス制度), businesses must issue invoices that clearly show the tax rate and amount for each line item. This calculator helps verify consumption tax amounts for invoice preparation.

About This Tool

An essential consumption tax calculator for creating invoices and receipts in Japan. Supports both 10% (standard rate) and 8% (reduced rate), with tax-exclusive (add tax) and tax-inclusive (extract tax) calculation modes. Choose from three rounding methods to match your company's accounting policy.

Formulas

  • Tax-exclusive: Tax = Price × Rate / Total = Price + Tax
  • Tax-inclusive: Price = Total ÷ (1 + Rate) / Tax = Total − Price

About Rounding

The National Tax Agency allows businesses to choose their own rounding method, as long as it is applied consistently. Most companies use "round down," but you should follow your organization's internal rules.

Note: The reduced rate (8%) applies to food and beverages (excluding alcohol and dining out) and newspapers sold under subscription contracts.
